Masts and Spars FAQ's
Since the mid 1990's and still used today, Crabbers moved over to the
Sikkens finish on all their spars. This consists of applying two base
coats of Sikkens Cetol HLS Pine - 077. and then 3 coats of the Sikkens
Cetol Filter 7 Pine - 077. Only very light sanding if any is required
between coats. If re-coating existing spars that have had a varnish
finish, being a stain it is important to remove all the old varnish
first and sand the spar with 60 grit, 120 grit and then 240 grit before
coating.
There is also a Sikkens Cetol Marine stain / varnish
which is used by some manufactures including the builders of the Norfolk
range. This is similar and uses a single system to achieve the required
build - normally after 4 to 5 coats.
The Sikkens products are available from either Jewsons or Brewers outlets, or specialist suppliers on line.
Hope this is of help.
