The Traditional Art of Sign Writing Oars
In the days when every college oarsman would return home for the summer
break with a memento of their college achievements, an illuminated
rowing oar, there were many sign writers offering their services. Today
these skills have become few and far between; yet tucked away in the
back streets of Oxford there is still a lone artist who is probably
responsible for writing the crews names onto thousands of our oars over
Martin Price of Pimm and Smart Sign Writers still offers this service to the College students but the problem nowadays is the lack of old wooden racing blades, having exhausted most of the local schools and clubs. Keen to continue there has been talk of importing blanks from China, but if you can find the oar, Martin will happily illuminate it for you.
We used his services on a recent commission of skiff oars supplied to Lord Aberdeen, and it was fitting that his coat of arms was required to be carefully painted on each blade. Using the traditional methods the end result looked stunning and finished the oars off perfectly.
